Alto San Carlo at Selfridges, the best Lasagna in town so far.

Did you know that #Selfridges has a hidden away rooftop venue? Alto San Carlo is an award winning restaurant which is esteemed for their exceptional menu and verdant-themed terrace, overlooking Central London.


However, as you can see by the title of this review, the iconic fashion house ‘Dior’ has taken over Alto San Carlo for a limited amount of time (Jun 3-Sep 30 2021), and I was very fortunate and grateful to have found availability to dine here with my partner, despite high demand and limited access.


Dior At Alto was heavily inspired from the French Riviera, and the enticing Mediterranean menu was even influenced by Monsieur Dior himself, including dishes which were carefully selected by the house. And as you may imagine, the whole restaurant has been beautifully designed to enhance the Dioriviera collection, due to the featuring of the house’s signature ‘toile de Jouy’ print which can be admired all throughout the rooftop restaurant.


Upon arrival, we were courteously greeted by the hostess, she was exceptionally welcoming and friendly, we genuinely couldn’t have asked for a better reception. She seated us on the terrace where we were able to appreciate the spectacular views of the city. Despite the fluctuating weather, the sheltered roof was set up for us to not get caught in the drizzle.



After some indecisivity from what to choose from the menu, we requested the ‘Prosciutto di Parma’ for our starter, followed by the ‘Lasagne al Forno’ and ‘Spaghetti Frutti di Mare’ for our Cicchetti mains. Moreover, for our drinks I was recommended the ‘Trebbiano d’Abruzzo’ white wine by our waiter, and my boyfriend had a Peroni Nastro Azzurro.


Initiating our Cicchetti, we received our drinks and starter promptly after ordering. The ‘Prosciutto di Parma’ was beautifully garnished, served with fresh rocket and rustic, granular Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese. The prosciutto was flavoursome and delicate, and had a perfect balance of sweetness & saltiness. It paired undoubtedly well with the cheese and rocket leaves, the difference in texture and taste was a perfect combination when put together. Also, if you're a lover of good, dry, white wine, you must try ‘Trebbiano d’abruzzo’; it has a lively acidity and a perfect balance of floral, fruity notes.


Secondarily, we were served our main dishes, the ‘Lasagne al Forno’ and ‘Spaghetti Fritti de Mare’. I’m going to be entirely honest, the Lasagne al Forno was the best lasagne that I have ever tasted!! I was wonderstruck by how delicious it was, the tomato sauce was succulent, rich and pleasantly piquant. In addition to this, the slow cooked Beef Ragu was fine and savory, and had the perfect texture which matched incredibly well with the sauce. In regards to the cheese, it was heavenly! It was sharp, creamy and impeccably soft and elastic, and was an absolute pleasure to indulge in. Altogether, the lasagne was cooked to absolute perfection!



Moving on to the Spaghetti Frutti di Mare, it was marvelously full-flavoured and robust. It had the aroma of the sea, as good seafood should. The dish included prawns, clams and mussels which were incredibly fresh and pure. The spaghetti was also enlivened even more by the roasted tomatoes and the lightly seasoned garden-fresh herbs. This is the ultimate Mediterranean dish for anyone who has a passion for seafood. I almost felt like I was at a terraced seaside brasserie in the South of France which I most definitely relished!


In conclusion, this was such an exceptional afternoon which I will cherish in the long run, every aspect of our experience wholly met our expectations. We felt like royalty at Dior, At Alto; the service was absolutely impeccable, the design of the restaurant left us in awe, and of course the cicchetti was just divine.

I really believe that the ambience and ministrations from the team play a huge part in ensuring we have the best possible dining experience, not solely the food. As previously mentioned in the review, the Lasagne al Forno was faultless.


My partner and I asked our waiter to pass on our reverence to the cook, in which he was very delighted and appreciative with our comment. Overall, an unforgettable time. Despite the fact Dior at Alto will come to an end on September 30th 2021, I highly encourage you to visit Alto San Carlo.
